'Aser Prayer
  • Selam Aleikum,

I am a little confused with the first 4 Raka'at of 'Aser prayer. In some books I saw they were in parentheses, but am not sure of what that means.

I would like you opinion on what kind of Salat that is? i.e. are they Sunnah, Nawafil, etc. and if you have any reliable source to direct me to.

Thank you and may Allah bless you.

The Asr prayer consists of the following:

    1) 4 Rakat (Sunnah Ghair Muakkadah)

    And 2) 4 Rakat Fardh

A Sunnah Ghair Muakkadah is that injunction of Shariah which has not been emphasized.
It was not regularly observed by our prophet peace and blessing be upon him so its not highly emphasized. You will not be punished for not performing it. But you will be rewarded for performing it.

Yes, you can just pray the 4 rakat Fard only and not pray the 4 rakat sunnah.

It is better to pray both but the fard is necessary and the Sunnah Ghair Mukkadah is based upon your performance meaning if you perform it you will be rewarded and if you do not then there is no sin.

Assalam Alaykum
