Wipe the ears by inserting the tips of the index fingers into the ears, twist them around the folds of the ears then pass the thumb behind the ears from the bottom, upwards. Wipe the ears with the water used for the head. Do this one time.

Prophet Muhammad (sallalahu alayhi wassalam) said, "The two ears are a part of the head." (Sahih - At-Tirmithee, Abu Dawood, and Ibn Maajah)

From Abdullah ibn Amr (Radiallahu tala anhu) - about the way of performing wudu - he (sallalahu alayhi wassalam) said, "Then he (sallalahu alayhi wassalam) wiped his head and entered his two forefingers into his ears and wiped the backs of his ears with his thumbs". (Sahih - Abu Dawood, An-Nasaa’ee, Ibn Maajah, Ibn Khuzaimah)

Ar-Rabee bint Mu'awwidh (Radiallahu tala anhu) reported that the Prophet (sallalahu alayhi wassalam), "Wiped his head with water remaining in his hand". (Hasan - Abu Dawood and others)
  • What about wiping of the neck, is it permissible or biddah?
  • It is permissible. Wiping the nape ['the back part of the neck' - Webster's] is recommended. [Nur al-Idah, Durral-Mukhtar, Hadiyya al-Ala'iyya].

Ibn Sakan mentions in his Kitab Al-Huroof, the Hadith of Musaraf bin Umar which reaches up to Amar bin Kaab (Radhiyallahu Anhu) who says that I saw the Rasullah (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) performing wudhu, he masah of his beard and his nape.

Abu Nu’aim narrates in Tarikh Asbahan the Hadith of Ibn Umer (Radhiyallahu Anhu) that Nabi (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) said “Who so ever performs wudhu and makes masah of his nape is saved from the shackles on the day of Qiyamah.

Wipe the whole head, followed by the ears (without taking new water) and then wipe the back of the neck with your backhand.

Wiping the front of the neck is disliked and an innovation.

As for the statement of Imam Nawawi that it is an innovation because the evidence for it is excessively weak, this was not accepted by many other hadith experts.

Assalam Alaykum
